The Macromolecules of Life Grade Level:
All of life is carbon based. This means that all of the molecules found in the cells of your body contains carbon. Carbon is a special element that can make four bond with four other elements. Carbon is a very versatile element. Here you will learn about the four types of macromolecules in the category of biochemistry that are composed of carbons. These molecules form the basis of our understanding of biochemistry.

Macromolecules Grade Level:
Macromolecules are large molecules that form the basis for all living things. Macromolecules are also known as polymers which are long forming chains of atoms. These polymers are what form the proteins which are the building blocks for our bodies. They also form other major developments such as plastics including nylon, paints, and adhesives. Our clothes that we wear and the food that we eat are also made up of macromolecules.

History of Visualization of Biological Macromolecules Grade Level:
This web site provides a history, albeit incomplete, of methods for visualizing biological molecules. The information is accessed via links which are organized in two categories: "Physical Representations" and "Computer Representations." Each link yields an explanation of the visualization device, how it was constructed, and its importance. Color photographs of each device are presented to enhance the explanation. Textual links provide additional information and definitions. Very interesting information!

Biological Molecules Grade Level:
Explore four biological molecules, also known as macromolecules, found in living things. To get to the DNA in the nucleus, soap can dissolve the lipids and the protein can be filtered. DNA is a nucleic acid, but macromolecules also include carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. Lipids are made up of single monomers, but the other macromolecules have multiple monomers. Discover the building blocks and role of each macromolecule. Explore directionality, function, and synthesis. Find out how monomers make polymers.

Biological Molecules - You Are What You Eat Grade Level:
Biological molecules are the ingredients of life. They provide instructions and energy. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are found in creatures from mites to whales. Learn about a scientist who studied human waste to learn about biology through chemistry. Prout was the first physician to understand that humans need carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in their diet. Investigate the chemical formulas of different types of sugars and fats. Explore the roles of different types of proteins and the amino acids that serve as building blocks.
