Although the land that is currently known as the capital city of Madrid, Spain, has been occupied since prehistoric times, the city itself did not obtain the status of capital city until the mid-1500's. This site talks about the history of the city of Madrid, starting with prehistoric times, through building of the first fort where the Royal Palace stands today, in the late tenth century.
