| This short biography of Felix Lope de Vega Carpio states that he deserved the title of "Father of the Spanish Theatre". Carpio was born in 1562 in Madrid, Spain. This was two years before Shakespeare was born. It was recognized early that Carpio was quite smart. He could read and write Latin at age 5 and of course he was already reading and writing Spanish.
