The Life of the Industrial Worker in Ninteenth-Century England Grade Level:
Conditions in the English textile factories were investigated in 1832. Read evidence published from testimonies given to Parliament. Children, even at the age of 6 to 8 years old, were required to work 14 to 16 hours a day. If they were late or did not keep up with their work, they were beaten. At age 17, they might be required to work as many as 19 hours. This evidence led to the passage of the Act of 1833, which limited the hours woman and children could work in the factories.
